hello ixp people!
i hope you are all well, and for those of you planning to travel to nigeria, i hope you are ready for the upcoming afpif event. unfortunately, i won’t be seeing you there, but INX will be ably represented, and if you have questions for PCH, you all know how to reach either sara, or myself [1]
i have some pleasant news for you today; not everything at afrinic is about elections (although elections are important, so please register, and get everyone in at your IXP that has afrinic membership to register too!) many years ago, afrinic started a project where they would provide dns secondary services for critical internet infrastructure (this means you, IXPs) and african cctlds. it was called the afdsp - afrinic dns support programme (it’s a terrible name, and you can blame me for that!)
i’m very pleased to see that, over the past few years, they’ve made steady progress in improving this. manhal (in cc:) has taken responsibility for this, and along with david, she has really been able to get the project to a point where they can now scale this easily.
manhal (and david) are inviting IXP operators to participate in the project, by hosting 2x VMs for them (ask her for the details). this will help extend where afrinic provides services, and may bring you slightly improved DNS resolution. she is mostly interested in supporting IXPs, so this is why i am making this introduction to her (and their project) so that you can speak to her directly, or communicate via their project page: https://dns.afrinic.net
i like dns :-) and a more distributed dns environment supports all of us, as well as the internet. please contact manhal directly, if you’d like to support their work.
and while we are on the topic of anycast - for the few IXPs that don’t have a PCH/Quad9 anycast node, you can write to sara at pch.net or myself to help!
best,
—n.
