an odd question perhaps, but certainly

background: I've been on/off working in the african internetworking space going back for around ~17 years now (less on during the 2018~2023 period, for various reasons). some of the places where my work was most active were ZA, KE, LS, UG, MW, ZM, NG, MZ, along with a number of other countries being touched on in the years where I was working with a communications NGO - they did a lot of UN/WHO/etc program assistance and communications work, and during my time I did a ton of scaling/systems health work in support of making that run even better, albeit more on the telecommunications side than IP and fabric. some of that earlier mentioned work included being one of the first transits outside of mweb and friends to start getting services live on seacom, some of the earliest v6 tests (back in the days when you could only get it in ZA through tunnelbroker), peering growth and fabric improvements in both LS and UG, a stratum1 launched in ZA in 2011 (iirc), operating one of the earliest alternate southern african debian/ubuntu mirrors, and a fair bit else

most recently I've again come back to a project I've repeatedly touched on over the years: attempting to improve reach, affordability, and quality of connectivity in low-income areas. between both that, and the concerning events around the afrinic board, I sought out all applicable african internetworking lists to start getting a sense for the lay of the land (again, owing to having been a bit out of it for a while)

in taking up this action I even went over all the archives of the recent years (on afnog, etc) to see what people had been talking about, and I noticed a precipitous falloff - something that simply can't be good for the health of the ecosystem (and therein is part of thinking and the manner of my responses prior). but, once again, perhaps that is not entirely on topic for this list?

tangentially, I notice that your contact details indicate a Johannesburg telephone number, and I'm situated there as well. perhaps we could meet up somewhere should you wish to get to know me better

-J

direct, but not harsh: as an organisation that stands representative to the needs of _many_ entities, surely you can understand how that level of responsibility and accountability should be the absolute baseline? at least, I would hope so

regarding your question, I'm not clear on which part you would like to know an alternative about? the list on this mailman instance exists and operates _right now_, it can continue to be used as-is with exactly no modification. if you mean more widely the notion of collaboration platforms, that's probably out of scope for discussion on this list but for example https://european-alternatives.eu/<https://european-alternatives.eu/> is an option that has become a popular reference point for many recently

That is an unnecessarily harsh response.

Can you rather suggest an alternative?
